Why choose natural cosmetics?

Natural cosmetics are defined by law as products containing at least 95% natural ingredients. Why are they interesting?

Ecology: to move away from conventional cosmetics that often contain a high percentage of non-biodegradable synthetic ingredients or generate significant pollution during their production.

Health: to avoid controversial ingredients that are potentially carcinogenic, endocrine disrupting or allergenic such as BHT/BHA, parabens, phthalates, methylisothiazolinone, sodium laureth/lauryl sulfates and phenoxyethanol.

Effectiveness: to favour active ingredients such as plant extracts with real long-term properties, unlike conventional cosmetics which sometimes prioritise the immediate, often illusory "wow" effect.

Are Forêt Bleue products vegan?

In a concern for environmental ethics, we have chosen to use local beeswax instead of vegetable waxes, which are responsible for numerous deforestations that have the impact of destroying the habitats of animal and plant species. Beeswax is the only material of animal origin used in Forêt Bleue products. Furthermore, it goes without saying that Forêt Bleue products are not tested on animals.

What about shelf life?

It is important to keep our products away from heat and light. In optimal conditions of conservation, it is preferable to use our cosmetics within 6 months after opening. For our hygiene products (soap and shampoo bars) the shelf life is 12 months after the first use.

Where are Forêt Bleue cosmetics made?

Forêt Bleue products are entirely handmade in Switzerland.

What is Forêt Bleue's position on palm oil?

Palm oil is mainly used in processed foods: spreads, ready meals, biscuits, crisps, baby milk, freeze-dried soups, canned sardines, margarine, mayonnaise, cereals, chocolate, pastries, etc. The cosmetics industry consumes 10-20% of the world's palm oil production, depending on the source.

Palm oil is by far the most consumed vegetable oil, for various reasons:

In the food industry, palm oil is appreciated because it gives crispness to pies, holds up well in cooking, has no odour and is easy to store.

In the cosmetics industry, it is ideal for cold saponification as it provides both softness and durability to soaps

Palm oil is the most profitable vegetable oil in the world, with palms producing 4 to 10 times more oil than any other vegetable oil crop per cultivated unit of land

In some regions such as Malaysia and Indonesia, intensive oil palm cultivation is causing dramatic deforestation and displacement of animal species and indigenous peoples. In addition, some plantations are responsible for serious violations of the rights of farmers working under precarious wage and security conditions.

One tempting line of reasoning is that replacing palm oil with other vegetable oils would be a solution to the problems detailed above. However, because it yields more than any other vegetable oil, replacing palm oil with other oils would actually mean using more land, and therefore causing more environmental damage, with the risk of more forests being converted to agricultural land.

For this reason, Forêt Bleue believes that the solution lies not in a pure and simple boycott of palm oil, but in reducing our consumption of food products containing modified vegetable oils, which are also harmful to health. In cosmetics, we encourage a diversification of the vegetable oils used and research into the origins of the palm oil consumed. For example, Forêt Bleue solid soaps and shampoos contain RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) certified palm oil, which comes from ancient and sustainable plantations and is guaranteed to be deforestation-free. Launched by the WWF in 2004, the RSPO label imposes cultivation conditions for sustainable and humane palm oil, employing local communities for whom palm oil cultivation represents a positive alternative to coca or poppy crops.

Why do Forêt Bleue products not contain essential oils?

Ecology: Essential oils are real treasures with multiple virtues. As highly concentrated substances, their production requires a considerable amount of natural resources (plants, water and soil). While Forêt Bleue strongly encourages their use in aromatherapy, we believe that it makes no sense to use such precious resources to perfume cosmetic products. Therefore, we prefer to use a range of high quality perfumes made in Grasse, France.

Animals: In Switzerland it is permitted and common practice to test pharmaceutical products on animals. As essential oils can be used in both the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industry, they can sometimes be tested on animals.

Health: although essential oils can have very interesting curative virtues in aromatherapy, most of them also have strong contraindications (especially for babies, children, pregnant women, epileptics or fragile people, etc.). In addition, most essential oils are highly allergenic.
